Database normalization is a systematic method of structuring an integrated database, generally in terms of an application programming interface (API), in terms of a specified series of “normal forms” in order to minimize data corruption and increase data integrity. It was first suggested by Edgar F.Codd as a solution to the problem of inconsistent data in relational databases. It has since become a popular method in data security and data integrity management.

When a business entity needs to access data from another source in order to process that data or to store it in a database, it should be able to find that data in the normal form, i.e. without loss of information or integrity. The normal form of data is referred to as “transactional normal form,” (TNF). This is very important because of the nature of processing information by computers, which consists of processing a certain piece of information, processing a different piece of information and then returning the result of the original processing. If transactional normal form is not present, it would lead to database inconsistency and data corruption.

In most database applications, a number of tables have been generated from a set of primary keys. However, in the case of the application, these tables do not represent the sets of tables used for a single entity. A table is an association of columns. Furthermore, it can ensure that data is stored in the same way every time, thus minimizing the need to search for new information.

An index can be used to locate a particular element on a table and make a lookup on a table by its index name. There are various types of indexes available in database normalization; they can be stored in the usual hierarchical way, or they can be indexed by key values. For example, a row-level index may be used in a table for a column that corresponds to a unique name, or it may be stored as a secondary index that allows the same column to be retrieved by index name.

The indexes must also be used appropriately. Some indexes can be used to store the values of certain columns for the purpose of retrieving the data from a table for any reason, but the index must also not affect the data or the logical layout of the data. Indexing must be carefully monitored and updated to ensure the security and efficiency of a data system.

Most importantly, index maintenance is essential to maintain the index, so that users can use the indexed elements easily. Index maintenance, therefore, plays a critical role in the normalization of data. In order to achieve efficient index maintenance, data can be removed from the table as required for improving the accessibility of indexes and keeping index maintenance on track.

Normalization of data is the process of transforming an index into a suitable form for retrieval in a table. The transformation may involve the deletion of duplicate data and the addition of indexes that are not needed anymore and updating indexes that are out of date.
